Notes: Old Mill Lane was part the St. Helens to Ormskirk via
Rainford Junction line. The route was effectively made up of
two different lines that opened within a month of each other.
Old Mill Lane was situated on the St. Helens to Rainford Junction
section of the line, after opening in 1906 it no longer appeared
in the timetable after April 1907 but was reopened y the LNWR
on 1.10.1911 to accommodate a new Railmotor service.
In 1923 the entire route from St. Helens to Ormskirk became
part of the LMS which brought it under the direction of one
company for the first time. This did not alter the pattern of
services though they remained as they always had with St. Helens
line services terminating at Rainford Junction. Passengers wishing
to travel on towards Ormskirk had to change at Rainford Junction.
Old Mill Lane Station was situated on the south side of Mill
Lane. The line was double track and so the station was provided
with two platforms each of which had a simple wooden waiting
structure built by a local contractor. From its opening to its
final closure on the 18.6.1951 the halt was served by trains
running from St. Helens to Rainford Junction.
The line remained in use for goods services and for passenger
excursions and diversions as a through route up until 6.7.1964.
The station itself had no freight facilities, but was near to
the Pilkington Glass Sandwash sidings, also known as Old Mill
Lane. These closed from 30 January 1967. Although in reality
the station was a halt it never carried that name.
Trackbed north of station now part of Sandwash Close, leading
to an industrial estate.
