Station Name: FARNWORTH & BOLD
![]() After closure of the Widnes to St Helen's line as a through route in 1982 track lifting commenced at the site of Farnworth and Bold Station and gangs worked from here towards both Widnes and St Helens. Track lifting along the section of track from Farnworth and Bold up to Clock Face was completed first. Only about 1 mile of track to the south was initially lifted as trains continued to run for a few months at the Southern end of the line from its junction with the Ditton to Skelton Junction line just east of Widnes South station to Widnes Number 1 Signalbox. The reason for this was that a spur, opened in 1964 connected the Widnes to St Helens line with the former Widnes Loop Line at Tanhouse Lane. The Spur enabled the closure of the Loop Line to take place but at the same time allowed trains to access a cement factory at Tanhouse Lane. In order to facilitate the complete closure of the Widnes to St Helens line a new spur was put in connecting Tanhouse Lane with the Ditton to Skelton Junction Line. This opened in the later half of 1982 and the remainder of the Widnes to St Helens line at the Widnes end was lifted. This picture shows is looking south towards Widnes from Farnworth and Bold Station early in 1982. Track lifting has started and sections of the former southbound line can be seen cut into sections awaiting removal'
