Farnworth & Bold Station in April 1971. Note the missing edge paving stones from the northbound platform. They were smashed up by a derailment that took place in the late 1960s/early 1970. A trainload of cement empties was being drawn out of the nearby Asbestos factory when some of its wagons jumped off the rails. The driver did not see and so more and more wagons came off and smashed into the platform damaging it. The signalman and a shunter raised the alarm and the train was stopped but not before it had blocked both running lines'. I know this as a friend of mine was the signalman on duty that day.
