Notes: Bootle Balliol Raod Station was situated on the LNWR Alexandra
Dock Branch which left the Canada Dock Branch (opened in 1866)
at Atlantic Dock Junction, which was situated in a deep cutting
at the rear of the LYR Bank Hall MPD, and ran through to Alexandra
Dock. The branch opened on 5th September 1881 and it had stations
at Balliol Road and Alexandra Dock. Just south of Balliol Road
Station the line ran parallel with the LYR Liverpool Southport
Line on the same level for a short distance. On the 1.5.1886 a
junction was put in linking the two lines. This allowed through
running of services from Edge Hill to Southport.
At Balliol Road the line descended into a deep cutting and then
into a tunnel that took it under the Liverpool to Southport Line
and through to the docks. The station was located at this point.
It had a booking office at street level and paths led down to
the platforms.
Throughout its life Balliol Road Station was served by local services
that started at Liverpool Lime Street and then called at all stations
along the Canada Dock Branch before turning north at Atlantic
Dock Junction and heading for the terminus at Alexandra Dock.
This service finished on 31.5.1948
The line was always more busy for freight and remains so to this
day as it connects with the north Liverpool docks.
