Atherleigh was opened in 1935 to serve new areas of housing that had been developed in the area. When it opened there were 20 weekday departures over the line. The station had two platforms with fairly basic facilities.

By 1954 services over the line had declined to only six running between Bolton Great Moor Street and either Kenyon Junction or Warrington. The station closed on the 29.3.1954. Atherleigh was used after closure for holiday trains until 1958.
