German Air-Raid Shelters - an introduction to the Luftschutzbunker of World War II

The purpose of the buttresses and 'portholes' is not obvious to me but architects may well be able to explain (feedback will be most welcome!). The tripod structure on the roof is an air raid siren with a rain cover above it.
