The AAOR at Mistley: Under threat!
[Posted July 6.]

AAOR BUNKER - MISTLEY - ESSEX - LISTING APPLICATION.
The AAOR at Mistley is possibly now under threat as the site has reverted to
its original owners Essex County Council who are keen to dispose of it along
with the adjacent land. This could include development potential. An
application has now been made to English Heritage to have the building
listed and anyone wishing to support the listing application should write to; The Operations
Co-Coordinator. English Heritage Operations. 1 Waterhouse Square. 138-142
Holborn. London EC1N 2ST. The listing application reference is 162010 and it
would be helpful if people could include the application number in the
letters.

The AAOR started life in the 1950's as an army Anti Aircraft Operations
Room. This function closed in 1955/6 and in 1963 the site was purchased by
the County Council as an Emergency Centre. For a while it was the main County HQ
later becoming the Stand-By HQ after a new protected centre was built at
County Hall in Chelmsford.

In 1995 the site opened as a museum winning several awards before closing at
the end of 2002 due to the sad death of its chairman and the county council
trying to impose a commercial rent. As a consequence of the museum years the
bunker was fully restored and retains almost all of its original interior
including the galleried operations room.

It is therefore one of the best original remaining examples of such a Cold
War Building and it would be a tragedy if it were lost to development.
