[Posted May 16.]
Following a great effort by staff and many volunteers, many years of research and restoration work, English Heritage have just opened the ROC / UKWMO Group Head Quarters bunker at Acomb, York, to the public. Tours of this new and exciting restoration can be booked (in advance) now!
Highlights of this fully restored site include many original artefacts, much of the original paperwork, two level central operations room, AC plant rooms, dormitories (a chilling reminder of the cramped conditions the occupants would have endured) and a fully wired/working example of an Emergency Communications Network (ECN) telephone switch, replete in its original Nuclear Electromagnetic Proof cabinet (NEMP) and original UPS back system. This is a completely unique restoration of a building of this type and thus is highly recommended.
Visits are by pre-booked tours only and will take you through the two level semi-sunken bunker and include an AV presentation outlining the sites context within the ‘Cold War’.
The bunker will be open to the public from Monday, 15 May, by pre-booked tour only. People interested in visiting the bunker can book by telephone on 01904 646940, by e-mailing yorkbunker@english-heritage.org.uk or in person by going to Clifford's Tower in York. Prices are £5 for adults, £4 for English Heritage concessions and £3 for children. Exclusive specialist tours and education packages are also available.
