Anstruther: Type 80 radar `modulator building'
© 1996 Richard Lamont
In the late 1950s, when this site was still functioning as an RAF radar
station, the WWII radars were replaced by a newer and much better model
known as Type 80. The huge 75-foot scanner would have been on a gantry
straddling this building. Some of the electronics was in a transmitter
cabin which rotated with the aerial, and some more of it was housed in
this building.
After the Home Office turned the site into a regional government bunker,
the modulator building was used just to house a large diesel generator.
The three large fuel tanks, if they survived an attack, would have kept
the bunker going for weeks after the mains electricity had failed.
